I have a 1965 Evinrude 9.5. Not knowing the overall condition of this motor, I have started going thru the motor, starting with an impeller that didn't seem to be pumping water. I posted a thread asking about lower unit oil, and Scuba Redneck provided me with a link to find, and price parts for my motor.

I had intended on running the motor, to determine what condition the ignition and carb were in, but after going to the provided site, ( and reading the myriad of posts regarding old motors and carb/igntion problems here at IBoats) pricing out the parts, it looks like I can replace the points, condenser, both coils, and buy a rebuild kit for the carb, for less then a hundred dollars.

Seems like the best way to go, true?

That would certainly address any yet unfound problems, is there a better way?

Thanks!

First thing to do would be to check the compression to make sure you have something to work with.

My motto is 'don't replace good parts'. That can get spendy. Compression. Proper spark. Fuel, and it's delivery. Proper cooling. Sealed gear case. I bet a million outboard carbs have been cleaned/kitted when there was a spark issue. Spark needs to be 1/4" blue snappy bolt on an open air tester.

Good luck!

I'm from Mn.. so 'spendy' is a word!

It is ok, I suppose to consider the possibilities (like coils) but don't replace them "just because". They may be perfectly OK.

Also, the 9.5 is prone to other serious problems. Like smoke inhalation. And broken mounts. Get it running (on a boat) and see how it does. Then decide what you want to do with it.

Smoke inhalation from a split shift shaft seal under powerhead (specific to a 9.5)? Been there!

Re: No brainer?

Compression test makes sense, and I have equipment to do it. I had read thru some of the articles in the FAQ section that I thought pertained to what I was possibly facing, and read this

If your motor has been sitting for many years and the coils are cracked or otherwise nasty looking, don't waste your time ---replace 'em!
It's really worthwhile in my opinion to replace the coils, condensers, points, and spark plug wires all at once.

Thats why I mentioned replacing them, according to that article its a good idea.

I did check to see if I was getting spark form both plugs, but I did not use a tester Do you need to do both at the same time, or can that be done one at a time. I saw a picture of tester built to do two at once, so I want to be clear on the right process.

As far as broken mounts , and a split shaft seal, where and how? Or, what do I look for to determine if I have either.

There is a video I made of it running, what do you think?

Thanks again I appreciate the input
