No Brake Lights but....

The high visability lite works when the brake pedal is pushed (the one in the rear window). Left and right directional works, no fuses blown, and I don't have a book. It is a 96 Mercury Mystique. When I push down on the brake pedal, I can hear the solenoid lock out on the shifter disengage. Everything works except the brake lights. This is my sons car so I would like to help him get it fixed before someone runs into him and my grandbaby......Thanks....SS

Sounds like it could be a problem in the turn signal switch.

Re: No Brake Lights but....

If you spend a lot of time just rewire it with your son and grandson. It will teach him a little about his mercury wiring and the car. Might want to change out the bulbs with some long lasting bulbs all around the car and get some nice bright headlamp replacement bulbs, giver er an oil change rotate the tires, check the break pads, and change the wiper blades. Throw some seafoam in the gas tank and clean the air filter and radiator off. Some fuel injector cleaner never hurt anything.

That's my routine.:D

Sounds like a bad ground to me. Check by the tailights for a broken ground.

Re: No Brake Lights but....

The problem cannot be in the light assemblies as the turn and tail lights would not work. The light sockets are like new condition. No signs of corrosion or even overheating.

I didn't think about at the directional switch itself. I think I need to find a manual to look at the schematic. I know it isn't at the brake pedal switch as the light in the rear window works as well as it unlocking the shifter. Thanks,.......SS

Time to get your test light out ...check the brake switch is your frist check after you check for power then depress the brake pedel you should have power on all wires....if not it is faulty....power on all go to bulbs and test for power at socket with pedel depressed ....no power check harness ground ...if all is ok then and only then test the turn signal switch for a fault....would more than likely be the ground

Re: No Brake Lights but....

I think your problem is at the back of the car since the "third"
brake light works. This rules out the brake light switch and the
turn signal switch.
One wire is going to carry the brake light current to the back
of the car and then it will branch off to the third light and the
other two.
Do check the bulbs, not too likely but they could both be bad.
+1 on the test light and checking grounds.

GOOD LUCK

^^Agree! ^^
Find where the brake light wire splits to go up to the third brake light and check that connection first.

Re: No Brake Lights but....

Your most likely cause is the multifunction switch which is the turn signal
switch. The power from the brake switch runs from switch to multifunction first then to brake lights. The high mount light however is a direct feed from the switch. I do these all the time in ford and chevy they are both wired the same.
