No button on control box means not an electric shift?

I have avoided a perfectly good outboard in my grandfathers garage (sat 40years plus looks brand new) because I thought it was an electric shift. But now that I think about it, the control box it had had a throttle for reverse, neutral and forward and a throttle for going faster and slower. I don't remember seeing a button like people are describing that there electric shifts have. Was there ever an evinrude, maybe a 72 73 or 74 that had the same styling as the electric shifts but wasn't an electric shift? I know the 75's look different with the blue cowl, this one if I remember was a tanish. I might take a ride over to get the serial and model and find out for sure, i'm intrigued!

Could still be electric shift, with a switch inside the control box that you can't see.Look for the throttle cable that comes out of the box (usually black, alittle thicker than a pencil). It runs back to the motor and controls the engine speed. If there is a second cable running out of the box,and back to the motor,it is NOT electric shift.

DHP

Control box was thrown out with the boat (regret that now) after they were both sitting for 30years outside, can't remember the cables off the top of my head, i never used the boat. I might take a look today, I THINK my only chance is 1973 if i am reading right. 1968-1972 was electric shift, 1975 the engines changed there look, had a different evinrude lettering, and 1973 is the wildcard. I think I would also see a blue and green wire going down into the foot if it was electric shift.

Sounds like you're saying the control box has two levers, one for throttle, one for shifting. If so, that indicates manual mechanical shift.

Standing in back of the engine, look at the right (starboard) side of the engine, just below the hood. If there's a shift lever there, the engine is absolutely a manual mechanical shift model.

Get the model number back to us.

Nope, definitely an electric shift, model number was 6-073d, the second number was scratched off so I really couldn't tell but the last three number 073 puts it at 1970. And this is a 60hp not a 65hp outboard like I thought it was. I couldn't find any mechanical shift on the side of the engine either. It turned over by hand to might have some potential, maybe when I get some free time I will mess with it.

Maybe that control box was not the right one? Odd
