No charge - grounded stator?

Hey Folks,

I've been trying to figure out a charging problem with a 90 Johnson (J90TLCCA), and I think I have it figured out, but I want the experts (you know who you are) to give their opinions before I order more parts.

I have a 9 amp system with the regulator/rectifier that was not charging but the tach was working fine. I wrongly assumed the regulator was bad and I disconnected it and connected a simple rectifier since I had a spare laying arround. Still no charge. I then checked the stator winding resistance and it was right on at .7 ohms but resistance to ground is about 2M ohms. The manual says this should be very high, but I'm guessing that by very high they mean close to infinite. I'm now thinking this stator is grounded and needs replacing.

Does this sound right? I do have a spare 6 amp stator, can I use this with the original regulator, or should I just buy the correct replacement stator? This is for a skiff with 2 batteries and minimal lights/electronics, mostly used during the day.

Thanks for the help - This is my first OB and I have learned a bunch from this site!

-John

Re: No charge - grounded stator?

You should not have anything to ground, with the stator leads disconnected.
