I'm new to Evinrudes---and I've had a no charge condition on My 175hp since I bought it 3 years ago. It seems according to this forum that I am not alone. I've got the book detailing test procedures, and an ohmeter--and I'll run the tests described.

Does anyone know what typically goes wrong in these cases?

Also--are aftermarket parts available, and would they be more likely to outlast the OEM parts, which apparently fail with the rising sun.

Re: No Charge on 78' 175hp Evinrude

The tach for this engine is driven from the charging rectifier. When tachs start to act up, it is usually due to a bad rectifier. Check this first. Since the rectifier also is responsible for charging the battery, it is probable that the battery is not being recharged. 581603 is the original factory part number for the rectifier-it's probably been superceded a few times to another number.
