I have a 1967 40 horse Evinrude. Last summer I ran into dead battery problems. The motor is equipped with manual and electric start. Is it possible that the motor does not have a generator? If not how many starts would i get on a fresh battery? If it should have one, what does it look lik eand where do i find it on the motor? How do i test it?

Re: no charge

With the motor off check the voltage at the battery with a volt meter. It should read around 12.5 volts or so. Then fire up the motor and test again. If you have an alternator the voltage will read 13.5+. If it stays a 12.5 or less than either your charging circuit is not working or it isn't there.

I had strange dead batteries or almost dead till I remembered rain and my bilge pump in a wet spell. Is this a new problem that never use to happen or what ?

If there isn't a large, cylindrical generator on the right hand side of the carburetor that is connected to the flywheel by a toothed belt, don't expect your battery to charge. :)

If it's not there, your money's better spent on a good battery charger than the generator.

Is your engine electric shift?
