I have a Mercury 115 outboard. motor runs, however of course the prop doesnt spin in gear. now i read it is supposed to clunk when you put it in gear? or is that just hearsay?

With the cowling off , with motor off, i can see a lever move when i shift it in forward and reverse, (no noise what so ever) it rotates the distributer , but i can spin the prop freely in either direction.

With the motor on, (garden hose attached and flowing of course) when i push the handle all the way forward or backwards all it does is rev the motor up high and rattles really loud at the bottom.

So was curious if it was actually putting the motor in gear or not.

Thank you

Yes, they clunk.

Is the shift cable moving the shift slide under the throttle cable? Chances are the shift cable or remote control has a problem.

Does the remote have a throttle only button that isn't popping out in neutral?
