No complete reverse

I've changed the impeller of my 62 Merc500 and have put my lower unti back on. When i shift it everything seems normal but the reverse isn't as good as it seems. Soi adjusted the cable as far over as she will go but the gears only clatter. If I take the controls off I can push the shift lever a little further enough to engage but I'm guessing it should not have to be that way.

Is it possible that i must adjust something inside the controlbox? the adjustment of the cable on the engine doesn't go any further but it is almost there, when i give it a little push it is in gear.

Can anybody help me, did i do something wrong? What is the right way to fix this.pmoreel

Re: No complete reverse

It sounds like you bumped the shift control arm when you removed the lower unit. You will have to drop the lower unit off again, turn the shift rod to find the neutral point, set all of your controls back to center, then reinstall the lower unit.

Re: No complete reverse

I've dropped the LU several times trying to it work better but still not. Do i have to pull of the shifting cable and put it in neutral by hand just on the motor?

Isn't there any type of adjustment inside the mercontrol?

pmoreel-
If you had no problems with shifting before you pulled the unit off you are not assembling it correctly. Step one... buy a manual or at the least look one up on the forum.
Next, you reassemble the lower unit in forward gear not in neutral. So start by putting your shifter in forward, remove the LU and then line up the SS cam so that it is just off neutral but in forward. The high part of the cam will be at about the 1 0clock position. Assure that you have forward/neutral/reverse and good lock up BEFORE you reassemble. Replace the unit and you should be good to go.

You posted with someone else who has a similar problem... chatter when in reverse. Yours sounds like an assembly/adjustment issue. His is sounding like the dogs on his reverse gear are shot. He needs to drop his unit and start with assuring fwd/neutral/reverse there just like you need to do.

Poor adjustment is most always the cause of worn out gears... make sure you are set up right and adjusted correctly. The repair of the lower unit may be higher than the motors worth. That's just one more reason why you need a manual to prevent expensive repairs. It's worth the $20-30 bucks.

Good luck!

Re: No complete reverse

Ok that makes sence. But should i pull the gear of the motor and put it in forward by hand and also put the mercontrol in forward with the cable of the motor? So that everything is right and put it back together then? And finally fine tuning it on the cable adjustment?

This seems to be the best way i think, or am i wrong?
