You've got to pull the heads to find out what's going on in there...plain and simple. If the motor is trashed(and you don't want to fix it)....part it out and recoup some of your money.

And what was the compression before you paid for it?

honestly i didnt check it. i know i should have. i drove the boat and it seemed ok. i really knew nothing about outboards, compression, or boats in general. i did some research while i was looking but not enough i guess. this is one expensive lesson.

Maybe, maybe not.
Could be something simple....and cheap.
Start with the head gasket....inspect the old one.

the metal on the plug is what scares me. you can see it in the cylinder through the plug hole as well

If you have alum/metal on the tip of the plug, you have a real problem. Probably burned that piston up running lean.

I had one once that was like what you describe. Not only did it destroy the affected cyl (#1), but alum was all through the engine. Somehow it got all the way down to #6!!! There were aluminum balls all through the motor. Wipe your finger on the rod for #6, and come back looking like the Tin Man.

I fixed it tho, it was a full rebuild, probably cost approx $1500.

You can fix that pretty easily, it looks like to me anyway.
It is tricky tho. Not for the faint of heart.

Re: no compression in one cylinder!!! trash engine or try to fix?

well there really isnt much damage to the cyl wall!!! the majority of what is in that picture id aluminum melted on the wall. so im going to attempt to tear this bad boy down clean off all of the aluminum i can then have it honed. im hoping that will do it. if not the guy at the machine shop recommended a bore. so my next step is to get a manual. anyone know where i can get the best sevice manual?
