No cooling water 12.9 122hc where at does it come out

I BOUGHT A CRYSLER MOTOR 12.9 122HC 1972 OUTBOARD FOR MY HUSBAND HE LOOKED AT THE WATER PUMP.IT HAS ALOT OF SMALL FIN'S ON IT...SOME HAVE 5 OR 6 THIS ONE HE HAS HAS ABOUT 15 06 16. HE SAID THERE IS NO WATER COMING OUT THAT IS VISABLE.HE HAS IT IN A TANK..HE WON T RUN IT HE IS AFRAID HE MIGHT BURN IT UP.>? DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG BUYING HIM THIS..HE WANTS TO GO FISHING REALLY BAD.I CAME TO YOU GUYS THREW A FRIEND SAID YOU MIGHT HELP ME PLEASE:confused::

The way to tell if it's pumping is use a set of muffs.
On the gear housing are slits.That's the water pickup.
That small an engine,you'll need to duct tape them in place.
Duct tape won't stick to a wet motor but will hold in place when you apply water.
They make a special muff(if you can find it)(see pic)that's cut down and will fitTach and stuff 001.jpgTach and stuff 002.jpg over the slits.

Then start it .
Water should come out the snout on the bottom of the cavitation plate.
Also if it's running and you can touch the head without burning your fingers it ain't too hot and it's pumping water.

Then get a NEW impeller and make sure it's in right.
Not sure there's a thermostat in that motor but they usually don't go bad if ran in fresh water.J
