no dipstick OMC 5.8

hi guys...here's my problem...22 ft. Cruiser with OMC Ford 351W. No dipstick, thus no way to check the oil. There is just an automotive type plug in the pan. Is there a tube assembly that screws into the pan or what? Dumb question, I know....Thanks in advance.

My 5.8 has a brass or bronze fitting about 1 1/4" square that screws into the side of the oil pan on the port side. From this fitting - the dipstick tube comes out the top, and the drain plug comes out on the opposite side from the oil pan.<br /><br />I've never seen anything like this setup - but it works. Maybe someone here knows where to find one <br /><br />Hope this helps.

See a Johnson/Evinrude dealer for a parts breakdown. Datawire is correct that many OMC motors used an adapter block, thru bolt, and oring at the oilpan drainplug, and ran a tube and dipstick up from that. The idea was so you can fully pump out the oil when it was time to change it.

What year is it or do you have the engine model #, we should be able to get a parts picture with part numbers for you.

Sorry...the earliest parts info I could find for a 5.8 is 1989, see the link for an exploded view of the pan and fittings/dip stick, not sure if it will help you. 5.8 Oil pan/dipstick
