i was running my boat around 4000 rpm and something went in the drive line. i put the boat in gear and the engine revs up but the prop doesn't turn. the prop turns cw+ccw manually with engine in gear.

could be the gears or most likly the shaft coupler. it could also be a spun hup in the prop. does the water pump in the drive still pump water?
good luck and keep posting

You didn't mention the year and model outdrive, but if you have the original Cobra drive, not the Cobra SX, and recently changed gear oil, it may have been filled wrong and the upper gears come apart from lack of lube.

Those older Cobras have to be filled from the MIDDLE screw, not the bottom drain screw like other units.

I DID RECENTLY CHANGE THE OIL AND FILLED IT THE SAME WAY THAT I DID MY MERCURY, FROM THE BOTTOM SCREW. I HOPE SEAHORSE ISN'T RIGHT. I LIKE RODBOLTS SUGESTION BETTER. A SPUN PROP IS CHEEP. WILL PULL APART TONIGHT AN WILL POST RESULTS

please let us know the outcome. I am experiencing the same problem except that when I slow down, put it in neutral and then forward, the prop catches again.

Re: no drive omc cobra leg

On the Cobra drive you have to use the fill hole that is near the cavitation plate, not the bottom most one on the lower unit which is the drain. The regular Cobra units take about 64 oz of gear oil, you should pump it in slowly with the fill plug/dipstick out so all the air can be expelled. After changing it I like to let it sit for a while, and re-check the level before running just to be sure. Get an OMC shop manual, the best $$ you will ever spend on it!

Just a note:
For those with 94-? OMC Cobras: On these models, you DO fill from the bottom, with the oil level check screw out middle and the top dip stick out.
I did mine this way early this season and dip stick indicats full oil still and no issues.
