no forward but have reverse

I have a 1994 Johnson 30hp model J30ELERM motor runs great til I put it in gear then I though it was missing like no spark, because it got rough and choppy but it became clear quickly I have no forward but do have reverse. It makes the boats shake hard when in forward but does not move.

sounds like the forward gear is gone. I hate to say it sound like time for a rebuild.

Before you do anything drastic like rebuilding a lower unit,check out if your remote cable needs some adjusting.there is a little wheel on the cable near the engine.turn it so it pulls the forward more forward and see if that helps.

Thanks both for your answers I did try adjusting the cable after you mentioned it and with it all the way forward there is still nothing.
If I try to change forward gear myself is there anything I should know? I have never tore into the lower unit before, but I do see where the forward gear is located on the unit by schematics I found here on iboats.

you will most likey need a pull I use a balancer puller the carrier wont be hard to get out if this motor was used in fresh water. When you get the carrier out you most likely see some carnage. Get a good shop manual.
