Hello I have a 1985 3.0 140Hp merc with a alpha drive.
Just replaced impellar and put back together. Now when I go into reverse or forward the motor dies.
I installed the lower unit the correct way(put it in forward at the throttle and forward at the shifter in the lower unit) twice and still same problem. I had REV and FWD before I droped the lower unit, any suggestions?
Adjust the cable?
By the way Prop locks 1 way in rev and dosent lock in fwd, but was locked when in FWD when I installed the lower unti. Please Help

Re: No Forward No Reverse

I think you may have not gotten the upper shift shaft aligned properly. It should face directly foreward.........

Re: No Forward No Reverse

ok so I reinstalled the lower unit and adjusted the shift cables so I have reverse and forward gears, also measerued cables at the correct places all ok.
So When I start it and put it in gear it dies in both forward and reverse, could this be the shift switch or are the adjustments really touchy? I dont think I need a new shift cable due to having rev and fwd before I dropped the lower unit. Also this is the second time I changed the impellar and never had this problem before?????

Re: No Forward No Reverse

But does it shift hard? If it does it is the shift cable hanging up the interupter switch, and the cable probably needs to be replaced.

Re: No Forward No Reverse

Usually when you do a direct replacement, ie. pull the drive to do maintenence - you should not have to adjust the cable and YES the adjustments are very touchy.
