Blue paint on hull. I was told it is used when boat stays in water and protects gelcoat from fouling...???

Depending on the age and type of paint I certainly wouldn?t be sanding on it without a mask and hazmat type suit. They've used, and continue to use to a lesser degree, some pretty nasty stuff as anti-fungal agents over the years.

They make paint stripers for the job but that can be messy and you still have to do something with the bio-waste when your done. Soda blasting is the best way to remove and dispose of the old paint but it can be expensive.

Keep in mind that once you remove the paint you?ll have a not so nice looking bottom to contend with. In the long run you might be better off to put new paint on the bottom and be done with it.

You don't say how big a boat, I used citri-strip from the orange box, $20 a half gallon, used one gallon on my 18' trihull. The stripper is easy on the fiberglass and left it pretty clean. Only thing, the stripper is biodegradeable the bottom paint isn't.
