I'm working on 68 Johnson 85 HP.
Model #V4AL-20A
Serial # J2904731

I did some ignition work on this motor (messed with the timing also) after I got through working on it I took it to the lake and tried to start it. It tried to fire then acted like it was out of fuel. I squirted some fuel into the carb and it started and ran until it burned the fuel that I squirted into the carb then died.
I took it home and pulled the fuel line at the carb, cranked it over and got no fuel. I changed the fuel pump tried the same test and got the same results.

Questions:
1. Could it have something to do with the ignition timing?
2. How do I check the timing with the engine not running?
3. If not in the timing what else can I look for?

I'm new at working on boats, but I've worked on a few cars.

Thanks.

Do you have fuel to the fuel pump?

Do you have fuel from the fuel pump?

Timing on an outboard is done thru a procedure called link & sync. The procedure is in your manual. Timing also has nothing to do with you not getting fuel. Does your primer bulb pump up until it is firm? All the fuel lines plugged in firmly?

I've got fuel all the way to the fuel reservoir in the carb when I pump the bulb, but when I disconnect the line from the carb and turn the engine over all I get is a tiny stream from the fuel line. I also tried to chaeck for a vacumn and or pressure at the line coming from the engine and got nothing.

No I haven't rebuilt the carb. The boat was running, the amplifier quit then I replaced the amplifier. Took it to the lake and then it started acting like it wasn't getting gas. I checked for fire at the plugs and it's getting fire there now.

Stupid question but is your fuel pump hooked up the correct way ????
Can you prime the bulb till it is firm ????
If you take the fuel inlet line to the pump off and prime the bulb does it gush out ???

Re: No Fuel Help Please !!!!!!

The bulb is hooked up correct, there is a arrow pointing in the direction of the fuel flow.I looked in my seloc manual and it says that the fuel pump pressure is only 2 psi at full throttle. Maybe I'm just used to working on cars and expecting more than this engine needs because there is a small pulsating stream coming out of the hose. I think I need to take it to the lake and try to see what it will do there. But that will be sometime tomorrow. When I get back I'll post what happened. Thanks for all the ideas and I'll post again sometime tomorrow.

I took it to the lake and it started and ran fine, I got to take it out for a few minutes but not a good test. I'll try again later. I have a friend who's good with boats that says if a boat isn't getting enough fuel, that it will accelerate normally when you first open the throttle but then fall flat very quickly. He also says running an outboard lean will cause it to burn a hole in the top of the piston. Thanks again for the suggestions.
