no fuel no spark?

I have a 1998 5.7 GSI TBI, when I turn the key my fuel pump does not run. I checked to see if there was spark and there was not. I was wondering if there would be something that could control both? I just installed the engine and had spark and fuel before. I looked for pinched wires checked all connections. I did have the alternator wire wrong so had to switch. I was thinking might be a distributor module or pickup coil maybe? I have power going to the relay but nothing out. I am not sure what controls fuel pump signal? any advice is greatly appreciated.

Fuel pump should turn on when the ignition key is turned to the on position.
Not sure what relay you are checking, there are alot of relays.
Check fuses and circuit breakers.

Check the safety operators switch is operating correctly. The thing that you attach to yourself when running the boat...

My 2009 4.3 has an in dash fuse holder, i knocked the wiring of it some time back and it was only after ringing the previous owner who told me he had done the exact same thing!

the smaller gray wire on the back of the alternator was not tight. I tighten it down and started working.
