No GPS or Speedo? Use your smart phone

While sorting thru a prop issue this past week one of the parameters the helpful folks on this forum often ask is the speed of your boat at WOT in addition to all of the other info. Not having my gps installed yet and no speedometer on the boat I downloaded a simple iPhone application called Shipcompass that gives heading, lat/long and speed in MPH, KPH and KTS. It cost 99 cents and works great. There are other apps that do the same thing this particular one had the best ratings. So if you have a smartphone with a gps there is probably a similar ap available for your phone.

You should check this with other GPS device. It will probably be off quite a bit. At least my friends was.... until the phone sank to the bottom of the lake

I have MotionXGPS on my iphone and found that is within +/- 1 mph when compared to my car speedometer as well as my GPS. I think it was $2.99 for the full version and the "lite" version was free.
