94 Evirude 30 hsp. Runs wide open them alarm goes off. Pumping water fine. Still runs but won't go fast. Put in reverse, alarm stops , but won't go fast. Is the alarm preventing the higher speed. What's the steps to check out what's going on.
Thanks Skip

Re: No high speed

First step is to see if the engine is overheating. It can pump water but if the t-stat has failed closed, it will over heat. Notice any steam rolling when the alarm goes off? Have you tried to touch the flat place on top of the head when the alarm goes off?

Just another question, when was the last time the pump was serviced? If it's been more than two years....you could be due a new impeller.

Will try this. Is this why the engine won't continue to run at high speed. Does the alarm somehow keep the speed at a lower level.

Thanks
Skip

The alarm does nothing except to tell you that the motor is hotter than it should be. The motor will slow down as it overheats as the metal parts are expanding due to the heat and the motor is binding up. If run long enough you will destroy your motor or at least require an expensive rebuild. Far better to replace the water pump - - do the thermostats while you are at it.

Re: No high speed

Did the thermostat today. Had to take the back plate off of the engine where the plugs are. Installed a new gasket, and staggered tightening the bolts firmly. Does it have to be torqued down to a certain specification.
Thanks,
Skip
