Howdy guy's, I'm new to the post but I saw a thread about a 90 horse honda with acceleration problems and that's me. I didn't see any reply but maybe you have mechanics who'll respond if we try harder to get thier attention. I'm on redquads, that's honda atv forum, my honda rincon has broken down twice in 6 months and I'm talking major breakdowns. Alot of work and big money, very frustrating. I have a honda everything, my wife and I joke about if honda made a dishwasher we'd have one. I bought a new 2000 90hp Honda boat motor and have never touched it. Just love the thing, my wife likes to just put around the lake and that motor does that beautiful. than some relatives came around and wanted to ski and to my horror every time I tried to pull someone up that motor just bogged down, would'nt stall, just wouldn't go. Now back when I bought the motor the dealer said something about a warranty checkup but I don't remember it's been so long ago. Any body out there got an idea about what the problem with my motor is? I guess in reality Honda's no different than any other giant corporation, indifferent and arrogant, back to G.M. and Johnson. thanks for the time.

You may need to install a different prop, if all else seems OK.

Not sure if I'm reading your post correctly but did you buy it new in 2000? If you did and you've never touched it that motor needs some maintenance and quick!

Oil change, lube and oil filter.
Spark plugs
Lower unit oil
Water pump/impeller kit

These are all things you can do youself with the help of a service manual and the people here on iboats. Or you can have a dealer do it for you if time is worth more than money.

As for the trouble pulling a skiier, yep it could be over propped but it could be other things as well. Perhaps that boat has been sitting in the lake for so long that there is growth on the bottom of the boat? How does it run when you are not trying to pull a skiier; will it plane easily?

Or maybe the motor is too small for the boat; can't tell because you didn't post what that 90 is strapped to.

If you post back with some more details based upon the questions asked here I'm sure the folks on this site can help you to get where you want to be.

Cheers:)

Re: no horse 90 honda

I just bought a used honda 90 2001 model with carbs and all and its been nothing but problems. You might want to check the carbs mine keep clogging up i cleaned them two weeks ago and now im cleaning them again. Clean out all the jets and make sure the float isnt sticking mine starting bogging out at full throttle it would back down to about half power, lower it to an idle and it would run fine ran fine take off again bog out. The 2nd carbuerator float was sticking and runing short on gas at high rpm check it out it seems to be a common theme.

You might want to check out your thermostat, they are know for sticking open and not letting the motor warm up thoroughly, a cold motor does not develop full house power.
