no more carpet

I'm stepping away from carpet in my 98 Crestliner phantom and was wondering what you guys have done for different materials. I looked into the plastic cutting board material rather than putting marine grade plywood down, it doesn't rot, would be a good option but it's really expensive and super heavy. I'm back to plywood for ease of use and cost but don't want to carpet it. Carpet just seems like trouble, it holds water, can be tough to clean, and if you drop a hook you can spend time trying to get it back out of your new carpet. I was thinking of running vinyl or something like a rhino liner on the floor.... What do you guys think? Also when/if you put down vinyl did you wrap your floor boards or lay one piece of vinyl over the whole floor?

Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks for the help! I've worked construction and had boats all my life and still have no idea what you mean here, sorry.... CSM & Cloth, I'm guessing this is your basic fiberglassing project where I'd use resin and glass mat? Gelcoat with non skid??? Is this like a paint? I'll have to do some more research here.

If you are able to take the time and do some research it will be very helpful. There are so many different projects going on here but most of them follow the same lines when it comes to glass work...CSM is short for Chopped Strand Mat. It is a 'random fiber reinforcement' that comes in diff weights, it seems that 1.5 oz is most popular for transoms and decks.
I cant exactly explain what gelcoat is, it is typically what is on the outside of boats where you see the fiberglass. Drewpster for instance, gel coated his deck so that he can put snap-in carpert down, which may be something you could consider.
Hope this helps somewhat.

Re: no more carpet

What would I do without the forum THANKS GUYS! I fixed up my last boat (87 Tyee) thanks to the help I got here. I have a 110 Johnson idled down to 1 mph now running like a top from being a sneeze and cough machine before. The next guy to own that will have a fishing machine!

When you ran vinyl on the floor did you just butt the joints together? Do you run some sort of seam tape like with carpet? I carpeted my house but I've never vinyled a boat.... Thanks again.

I don't think you'd want seams. You'd either want to do it in one piece or wrap the individual boards.

Boatflipper is right on with the CSM. The use of cloth (10oz. for me) in addition to the CSM adds additional strength and a smoother finish for the deck area. I have read, here of course, that the CSM between the surface and the cloth makes a great bond.

Gel coat is a coating in which you add hardener, similar to resin. You can buy it with color or add it yourself. The non-skid I am using is an additive you also add to the gelcoat before application. The non-skid looks like sand, but they are tiny poly-something beads that aren't quite as abrasive as sand.

I am no expert, but this is what I have learned the last few months. Good luck! :)

Re: no more carpet

Got after it finally! I've been putting it off knowing that I was going to find more and more issues once I started and I was right. I pulled all the flooring in the back 2/3 of the boat last night. Yeah pretty much everything under the livewell was rotten. I'm glad I decided to tear it apart. I'm not doing a full restore here but I'll still have to snap a few pictures just in case my lessons can help someone else out here. Thanks again for your time helping me!

I was an engineering tech for years and now I am a Construction Manager and still had to learn a great deal. Still learning everyday...A much different type of construction.:D
