My 50 HP Merc hesitates for a second or two and then runs fine for a while. This happens below 1500 RPM in gear. My dealer says it's because the fuel no longer contains MTBE and the engine was designed to use fuels that have MTBE. I say he's is blowing smoke. Is there any truth to this MTBE stuff?

Lakeguy do a Google search on MTBE it's interesting. Print it out and give it to your dealer. I can see the cloud of smoke he blew all the way up here

dolluper,

Where do you get that information? MTBE has been used in Canadian gasoline, and has been found as a contaminate in ground water both in Canada and the USA.

Use and Releases of MTBE in Canada

No Mercury outboard motor was ever made to run specifically on gas with MTBE. Make sure you drive with your headlights on anytime you pass that dealership so others can see you thru the smoke.

When it was first introduced, there was this big scare that motors would be ruined with it. Haven't heard that any actually did.

wow
what is the dealer smoking :) :) ?
the only 2 things I ever found with MTBE fuels is it absorbs water redily and the fuel goes sour rapidly, sometimes in 6 weeks or less in an outboard.
but no running issues with it as far as carbs and ignition goes.
