So, I was told, if you don't name your boat and display the name on the back, you'll have bad luck on the water.... Doesn't matter the size or type of craft or body of water, bad luck will find you...
What do you say?...

Yea !!! Dam Man , even flirting with the Boating Gods is bad juju..There are 3 important aspects to naming a craft, 1- un-naming..hold a ceremony..lots of singing..gallons & gallons of RUM. 2-Naming a boat..hold a ceremony..singing..offerings made to the Gods...Lots of Rum. 3- splashing a boat with a new name..hold a ceremony...lots of singing.go play..when you return..LOTS OF RUM.

Or else the boat will blow up.....
and sink...
and curses will be on you & family for 50,000 years..

Even worse if the boat had a name, but it was removed or changed.

Re: No Name = Bad Luck?...

I'm not stuperstitious...but my first boat was named "WEEKEND WARIOR".

I was regular army...yet I did not DARE to change it.
Finally, several years later, I did change the name.

Later that summer, I tore nine foot of keel out from under her, my wife and I will never, ever, dare to mock the boating god's again.:(

Two boats later, we bought our new boat, "DAY'sDREAM". And we DID have a ceremony when we applied the name to her...Six years later, NO problems:D

Re: No Name = Bad Luck?...

My friend just bought a nice 24 foot sea pro (i think) he and his dad had been having a hard time getting it off the trailer at the ramp. This time his dad got a running start jammed on the brakes and dumped it on the ramp ,had to pull it into the river with another boat.Sent it to the boatyard fixed the keel, and he called the dealer to ask him to pick it up for him.The guy says ok,goes and hooks up to the boat and takes off goes over the first bridge and the boat comes off again(it wasn,t hooked).I asked him if he had named his boat yet----------------no name I,m a believer now.P. s. newspaper reporters came out the second time and he had to call the editor to beg for it not to be photographed and printed, next time i,m having a hard time on the water all i,ll have to do is think about richard

I think I've called my boat every name in the book. Too many names to fit on the hull.... It's only a 23'r...:D

My boat had no name when we bought it.... it also had more problems than a math book. We decided to name it (kind of named itself actually) and its been more reliable than my sundial ever since. :D

Re: No Name = Bad Luck?...

OK...Ya got me convinced. Now...How do I think of a name for her??? I have yet to put her in the water and I've had her for 3 months now.

I'm tryin' to make sure she's ready for it. SHe sat for 5-7 yrs. without being winterized or anything. I'm planning on her water trials just AFTER the 4th of July.

Re: No Name = Bad Luck?...

How about naming it "second life" or "born again" or "resurrected" If its been sitting a long time, you might want to name her something along those lines.... just throwing it out there.

Ours had no name for 31 years, until we got her this year. We've yet to display the name though.

My mothers pontoon had no name. It had it's share of problems. Our first boat was named and had no issues for the 17 years that we had it. Our pontoon is also named, but there is no place to put a name on it. So, we're thinking of a custom flag.

Re: No Name = Bad Luck?...

I don't name boats that are too small to be documented. Instead, I rub my head, jump on one foot for exactly 6-1/4 paces and spit in the direction of land three times, before leaving the dock. This is very important. It overrides the naming god, and if you burn joss sticks too, all other gods. ;)
