on my '91 175 hp black max, i am not getting oil from the remote tank to the engine mounted res. it is using oil but i have to keep refilling the engine res every so often as it will begin to sound the alarm.

is it safe to run this way given that i always keep the engine mounted res topped off? or atually WAS it safe to run it this way or could i do damage?

the real question is this: air pressure only facilitates the movement of oil from remote tank to engine res correct? and has nothing to do with the actual mixing of oil in the gas right?

what should i look for? thanks

Yes, thats right. Make sure you do not completly fill the main oil tank, there has to be about 2"s or so for the preasure to build in the main tank. Check the hose that comes from the engine for cracks. Make sure the cap is sealing correctly.

If you mean the bigger of the two, and the one in the boat, yes.

There is a screen on the bottom of the pick up tube in the boat tank. Clean the screen to make sure it is not plugged. If it has never been cleaned, there is a good chance that it is clogged.
