"NO OIL" light with continuous alarm

I have a 1996 Evinrude e90tleda with the VRO still hooked up. My "NO OIL" light has been coming on intermittently but with a continuous tone (same one as an overheat). This has happened at idle and WOT. I have tested the temp sensors by grounding them to the block and the light indicating overheat comes on. This first happened after I had changed the inline filter and water separator leading me to believe it was caused by air in the lines. Since then I have looked for air leaks and replaced hoses and the primer bulb but it still happens. I tried running it on a test tank with premix and disconnecting the oil line to the VRO for about 5 minutes and never got an alarm. Is there a way to test the "NO OIL" and "LOW OIL" alarms by grounding them out? My horn does the self test when I turn the key. Any ideas on what would cause these problems would be appeciated.

Re: "NO OIL" light with continuous alarm

The no oil alarm is controlled by a sensor in the VRO pump itself. It is either truely a no oil problem, or a defective sensor. The fix for the defective sensor is to replace the sensor circuit board. If you look at the VRO pump you will see where the wires connect. The circuit board should be replaceble on that model. You might check the BRP parts website.

Now if you are truely not getting oil, you need to find out why. The oil line may have a break or air in the line. The filter in the base of the oil tank may be clogged or there may be water in the oil tank.

Re: "NO OIL" light with continuous alarm

I checked the oil line and can't find any leaks. Also pulled a sample from the tank and didn't see any water and the in-tank sock filter is clean. I grounded the tank sensor wires and got the correct light with a continuous alarm so I guess my alarm horn doesn't make different noises for each problem, just has a dash light to indicate what it is. Is it a possibility the pump could be going bad? I do hear it making a clicking noise.
