1996 Johnson 200 hp ocean runner. No oil light is illuminated whenever the key is on. Vro pump is 2 years old, Dealer told me it is probably not the punp. System check tach is was replaced six months ago. I was told the light should only come on if motor is running, and not just with key on. Ten secong horn does sound. I am running the motor with a spare gas can that has a 50:1 oil mix in it and the motor is smoking a lot. It appears as if the pump is pumping oil giving me a combined fuel oil ratio of 25:1.

frghtdg
Sounds like the oil tank level sender is defective. Disconnect the 2 wires from the tank and see if the light goes off. If so, replace the tank sender.

Re: no oil light

The tach has 4 lights, check engine, overheat, low oil, no oil. System should self test when you turn key on, all lights on, 1/2 second beep, all lights off after 30 seconds. If one or more lights are still on, after 30 seconds the tach or wiring is bad. Tach should have 1 year warranty.

Re: no oil light

The light that stays on all the time is the No Oil light not the Low Oil light. I was told this light should not come on except during the self check, unless the engine is running. I tried unplugimg the vro pump wires at the vro and the light still stayed on.

Thanks for the replys
John

Likely the tach. Had same thing go wrong in second year. A tough pill to take at the price of a new one. Not difficult to change out if you got a buddy to lend you one.
