I dont know if I am asking the right questions, or if I am annoying some1, but I am lost....I messaged about finding out year of motor, and have not heard from any since I got 1 reply...but I hope I am not meesing this up, but I really need to find out how to tell year of motor, I think hubby has been ordering wrong parts for wrong year of motor.....The motor does NOT have a plate for the model # so now what do we do....Can any1 tell me how long they have made the 225 HP V6 Ocean Pro's and can a cover be universal for all different years and styles of motors?

I ordered a manual off of e-bay it said it covered motors the year 1990 and I think 60 Hp - 300 Hp...so I hope it help hubby...

look for a plug like this on the motor, should have numbers, and post them. covers are not all universal.

I found it! LOL! It is G2537102
Thank You! for giving me that little tid bit, my hubby thinks I am out of my mind, but I want to learn this stuff too.

I think our problem is the oil injection, cuz when we first bought and put the motor an the boat, we previously had a motor u had to mix the fuel and oil so he did not hook up the oiling system at first....And it seemed to run fine....to me!...but then he hooked everything up and now we get alarms...sometimes no alaram....it just gets up on plain and he will gas it it will get up to about 3000- 4000 RPM and then it just kills itself and wont start, sounds like it is getting NO FIRE for about 20-30 min...depends on how long u let it set, then it will start back up and u can cripple back to dock.

But I am a woman what do I know!...LOL!

Oh Boy!...

Now we are getting ready to take it to the lake to check it out and it won't start...NO Fire!...Checked all connections on the motor all GOOD!

The tach jumps to 2000 RPM when u turn the motor over to start, but it never sounds like it is getting fire to it....This boat did not have a tach when we got it...Could that be the problem?

When we first started having these problems we replaced the POWER PACK....still same problem...shuts down and no fire....

So we replaced the thing that had melted alot of gunk onto the motor...I think it is a STATOR....stilll same prob

So then we replaced the RECTIFIER/REGULATOR...still same prob

So then we replaced the wiring harness to the motor cuz hubby noticed corosion on the big plug.....

Now tach jumps when u try to start and it wont start....I have no idea on the year.....no model number on it.....I got the serial number but unable to find a website to help me with that part....

Please Help! we are going on 16 days straight of rain here and I am afraid we might need boatsoon...plus hubby is ready to sink it...I cant afford mechanic due to rain right now....Any1 with an idea I will try it...TY

Re: No Plate for numbers?! Now what!

contact a dealer, as the newer motors they did not put model #s on the plugs, and there is not a published list of serial numbers, but dealers have access to them.

the compression, it is more important for the numbers to be equal, within 10% of each other. very few compression guages read the same. and those big engine run on a lower compression.

check you kill wires, or kill switch. could be problem with no fire.

About those compression gauges. Just pretend they have tick marks and no numbers. I've got about a 40 psi spread between all my gauges. If they're even it's good. If your motor holds a good smooth idle, the compression is just fine.

It's very VERY important to torque down the flywheel to specs or you'll sheer the key. That could quite easily be the problem here. May want to pop the flywheel again and inspect.

Re: No Plate for numbers?! Now what!

I don't think that serial number you gave can be correct. Johnson made their 2 millionth motor in 1959, and 3millionth in 1968. I have serial number 5924582 and it is a 1984.

My list of model numbers shows the first 225hp as a 1986 and they continue up to 2005, the end of my list.

Re: No Plate for numbers?! Now what!

Does your motor have a large red cannon plug to connect the engine harness to the boat harness? If so, it's a 1995 or earlier. Disconnect that and check spark again. Don't try to start it because if it starts you'll have no way to shut it off other than flooding it manually. Just check spark.

If it doesn't have the red cannon plug it's a 1996 or newer. The connections are a little diffrent. Let us know what you have.

Re: No Plate for numbers?! Now what!

TY...I believe it IS a RED connection...YEP! I just walked out and checked it is RED.....as for the serial number I got that number off the very back of the motor on the "what I call a silver looking freeze plug" inbedded in the motor....maybe I am mistaking a 6 for a G....maybe it is 62537102..?!...

TY again I tried calling a dealer here this morning and he said he cant help without a model number....and that the motor should have had a title....but we bought it from a seller on e-bay from wilmington delaware and he said they dont require one in that state...who are we to know I live in Oklahoma...LOL!

Re: No Plate for numbers?! Now what!

OK now we put the original power pack on the motor because I noticed the replacement part we bought did not match our original powerpack....and then while hubby was checking motor I noticed smoke coming from behind the cawling cover on the bottom left side ( the 2 side pieces u remove to view entire motor) so I ask hubby what that is and he said he has an exhaust leak in the gasket so I am like OK.....so I noticed that everytime we put the cover over the motor, it wont run it spits and sputters and then when u remove the cover and run it it runs good.
So we checked to see if it was hitting something....NOTHING!
So I got to thinking about the exhaust leak....and we remembered when we got the motor the black plate that goes around the exhaust outlet on the back was gone...and hubby replaced it right before we started having these problems....so what I am wondering now is could that exhaust kill the motor from running...and if u put the wrong powerpack on can that cause it to not fire at all?....Also called a dealer and gave serial number to get exact year of motor and the guy laughed at me...said I was screwed and said dealers cant give year of motor just from a serial number....so I guess we will just have to say it is a 1990 because it has to be 90 something I'm sure....TY All 4 all your help!
