I put in new coils, points, condensers, wires, carborator kit and has no power and seems hard to start(10-15 pulls or more).

Before it wouldn't idle but started on two pulls and had lots of power. Now my 32# trolling motor moves the boat faster at half speed!

Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Sorry to hear that GE81.

A common result of wholesale replacement of parts that don't need replacement.

Did you use a Repair Manual?

Clearly you did something wrong or installed a bad part.

Sounds like it is running on one cylinder. On that engine that is most likely an ignition (magneto) trouble. Check both plugs for a hot, blue spark. See what happens if you kill spark to each cylinder when idling.

Let us know what you find.

Plenty of spark with both wires. Yes I used the maintenace manual I purchased online. Everything is at specs. Bought parts online also. I'll try killing the spark on each cylinder. Thanks for the hint.

MG

I haven't checked for a leaking headgasket. I will re adjust the carb needles. No compression test. I will have to take it in for that. I believe the timing is right, but I will check that out too. As soon as I know, I will let you know. Again, thanks for the help.

GE

MG

I'm begining to think its the spark because the top plug wire fires intermittently. I know I had great fire after I was done. Can the wire connection work loose? Is there away to guarantee the connection? I think the design is a bit faulty or maybe the new coil is faulty? What do you think?

GE

MG

What do you consider adequate compression on this engine?

GE

PS: Thanks for all the help. I think this will turn out to be a good engine is I get all the bugs out of it.

Re: No power after tune-up - 57 Johnson 5.5 hp

Hiya,

Just a thought, but when I replaced the coils on my 25 hp, I had good spark etc, but when I pulled the flywheel again after test running it for about 20 mins (I had to do that 'cause I wanted to adjust the point gap as the timing wasn't spot on), I found that I hadn't pushed one of the coil wires down far enough and the flywheel was rubbing on it. Would've caused a short and intermittent spark if I had run it much longer like that.

I used some liquid electrical tape to build up the insulation on the spot that had rubbed, and then made sure those 2 little wires were REALLY down out of the way when I reassembled it.

Now has quite a few hours on it with no probs.

may not be your problem, but then again ??

HTH

Brent

The intermittent spark after new components added usually means a wire in the magneto has gotten chewed up and is grounding against the flywheel. Care should be taken to tuck all coil leads down and out of the way of the flywheel. If you did nick a wire, you can tape it up or use a heat-shrink tube and move it out of harms way....
- Scott

Thanks again for all the help! I'm heading to the Big Horn Mountains and will continue after I get back next Monday. Trout are calling me and I must go see what they want!

MG:

Yhe problem was with one of the coils I installed new. I finally replaced it, nipped the wire a little and screwed it into the new one. So far no problems and the motor is running like a new one. I need to get the "O" rings for the fuel connector and I'll be set for quite awhile. Thanks for all your help. Very much appreciated.
