I have a 1960 Evinrude Lark II 40hp. Idles good, revs up good in neutral also. When I shift to forward I can't go more than about 5 mph. It just started doing this about a week ago. It's been running great for the 5 years I have had it. I haven't done anything new to it recently. I am stumped and very frustrated. Thanks for any suggestions.

Prop is new (2 weeks old). It's the engine or some component thereof. I know the symptoms of a slipping prop - very high rpm's and going no where fast. I can't even get the engine to rev up in gear. Maybe I wasn't clear in my original post, sorry.

Does the throttle plate on the carburator open when you apply throttle? How about the armature plate (where the spark plug wires come from), does it turn as you advance the throttle? That's just about the only thing I can think of that would have you going so slow, but not killing the engine.
If one cylinder wasn't firing, you should be able to get up to above 2000Rpms. If it was a carburator problem, I'd expect it to die as you throttled up.
Hope this helps..

Paul Moir , I have the very same problem with my engine 70hp Evinrude just came on over night. Sparks good firing all three. After one applacation of sea foam I was able to obtain WOT for about 3 minutes. This is leading me to rethink dirt in carbs? The motor idles well in gear for as long as you want just no power.
steve

Glen,

First try a de-card spray and see what that does.If that doesn't work ,it is time to re-build the carbs. I just did this with my 70hp Rude and it has never run better.

Deuce

Re: No power at wot

Just wanted to say thank you very much to all that responded. But Paul Moir you were right on the money and a special thank you to you sir. I found a cotter key had become missing somehow and allowed a small yet obviously very significant piece of linkage to come apart thus the stator plate was not moving when throttling up. I reconnected it, put a new pin in the tiny hole to hold it together and I am an extremely happy camper now, or should I say an extremely happy boater. Thanks a million guys and you can bet I'll be frequenting this website from now on.
