Hey , so we were away on vacation & were out pulling the kids on tubes & wakeboard & every once & a while , we would stop & float . Have a bite to eat & I would go to turn the boat back over & nothing....like it's not even hooked up to the battery but it is & fully charged . The stereo & depth finder work , which are hooked up directly to the battery . I would wiggle the wires to the ignition/throttle & finally it would start , this went on for about 5 days as we were on holidays...the wife would jam the life jackets up under the side where all the wires are....so I figured it was a loose connection up there....so I would wiggle the wires up in there.....then it would start.....so the last day we go to put the boat in the water & nothing....wiggle the wires , shake the throttle/ignition....nothing....still everything else works(radio/depthfinder)....so I pull apart all the wires that have a connection & redo them....still nothing....so I'm looking for some advice or suggestions on how or what this might be....it's a loose connection somewhere....has anyone ever experienced this !?!?

The motor is late 80s to early 90s mariner 175 outboard...any help would be greatly appreciated ! We have s salmon trip coming up the first week of sept & I gotta get this sucker going !

Thanks to everyone 👍

Well now that it's really broken it should be easier to find. Start with a multimeter set to 12v.dc. Black to battery neg. Red to starter solenoid relay - Turn key and check for 12DC. IF not there back track back to the key switch and try there. IF different it's somewhere on that wire in between. IF 12vdc at solenoid and on large 12v on solenoid from battery change the solenoid.

So.....if the solonoid was toast , would the trim still work ? A few times the trim would work , but no juice to the key....I'll try the multimeter Monday night I guess , we got some travel time here !

Start by cleaning all the connections at the battery, at the motor, etc. All connections. Make sure the connections are clean and shiney. If any of the battery cables show any signs of corrosion, replace it

Your radio and depth finder are wired separately than the motor/gauges

Check your safety kill lanyard

Yes , stereo/depthfinder wired differently....the safety/kill switch never had a lanyard when I bought it & I just never used it....I flicked it a few times to see if that might be the issue...but no change...
I'll try the terminals & wire connections to the batt.. thanks

Does a solonoid just go ? Or does it slowly go ? Or both ? Also , does the solonoid control everything up in the controls consol ?

Thanks

It can go either way, but it makes no difference, checking for 12V will answer all your questions.
