No Power Steering

The steering in my boat has become so tough that it has become a workout to turn... I had a gut feeling that it was the power steering pump so I swaped it out tonight. To my disappointment, nothing changed.

So now I want to go about it the right way instead of just throwing parts at it. I believe the steering cable was changed just before I purchased the boat about 5 years ago. But the steering has always been tough, but not as bad as it is now.

What is my next step? Do I need to dissassemble the power steering cylinder? If so, am I looking for anything in particular? Can the cylinder go bad, does it just need to be cleaned up or rebuilt? I believe the power steering oil cooler is clear, but I will verify tomorrow.

I am mechanically inclined, but not at all familiar with this power steering system and in need of assisstance.

Re: No Power Steering

Did you ever think that maybe power steering systems may have changed over the years. Maybe some info like engine, make model, outdrive type, year, Serial numbers etc. might give us a clue what power steering you might have?

Sorry! 1988 5.7 Liter cobra... First post without pertinent boat info, I promise! And to think I get frustrated with others who do that...

Try to remove the pin that holds the cable to the assist unit.
check the steering cable , check the outdrive. one will move freely.

1988 5.7 Liter cobra...

Ayuh,... I don't do OMCs,... But,...

You need to break the system down to it's components,+ Diagnose which 1 is screwing up....

As noted above, disconnect the end of the cable at the transom,+ Try each end,..
Which 1 Drags,..?? Tear that part down further til you find the Bad piece...
