I have a johnson 6 , bought it 2 weeks ago and today I tried it on my boat. It works ok but it just doesn't have any power. I have a 3 hp motor that goes twice as fast. I think maybe the electricity is the problem but im not sure.

So any help would be great.

Re: no power

What is the model number of that engine?

First thing to do is to check the compression. If it is identical and low on
both cylinders, suspect that the head gasket has blown slightly between the two cylinders.

If low on one cylinder, it may have blown the diaphram in the fuel pump. Check that diaphram by leaving the hoses connected but removing the screws that retain the pump to the powerhead. Now, put a nut on those two screws and tighten them so as to have the fuel pump assembly sealed. Pump the fuel primer bulb. If fuel can be seen leaking from the pressur/vacuum hole in the rear of the pump, the diaphram is shot, in which case, replace the fuel pump.

Check spark...... remove spark plugs. Depending on the year of that engine (you didn't say), the spark should jump either a 1/4" or 7/16" gap with a strong blue spark. Does it? What do you have?

If all of the above checks out okay, especially if that engine has been sitting for sometime, the carburetor is most likely fouled, in which case, remove, clean, and rebuild it.

Re: no power

its a 69 model

I dont have the tool for compression checks so ima waiting for my friend to take it from so could you just tell me what should the compression be (numbers)

The carb was cleaned by a pro today so that's good .

The spark plugs are new NGK but they bearly have a spark. Everybody said that the electronics are not good at all so im aiming for that.

Re: no power

I'd lose the NGK plugs and get the proper Champion J6C plugs that the motor was designed for. Yes, there is cross-reference charts that call plugs "equivalent" to one another, but that's not totally true.

Re: no power

well i think the plugs could not make such a difference that the engine has no RPM or power so thats probably not it . It could make a difference but a small one.

Re: no power

OK i checked the plugs and they work ,the spark is blue not extremely strong but i think ok.

2. i didnt check the compression but im going to check that in a day or too and il let you no then.

3. NOW SOME NEW INFO:
yesterday i removed the front cylinder cover and i found some weary interesting stuff.

1. the cover was sealed with silicone the regular one for baths and stuff so i think thats not the best idea for that and because i cant find the proper gasket
whats the best DIY solution for that.

2. the hole cover is weary dirty and covered with oil deposit and the piston heads are also covered with deposit so whats the best way for cleaning that ?

3 because the cylinders look worn out is there any cheaper and less part needing solution then boring the cylinders and replacing the pistons .

And because i guess the hole engine is sealed in a similar way would it be good to reseal it all ? but i have a problem with parts so any DIY solution is much better .;)
