i have a 1976 55 hp johnson, had it out the other day ran fine for an hour or so ,then it started to slow down could'nt get it back on plane, seemed like it was running on one cyl.. but it would surge on and off like it was going to take off, sounded like one of the carbs was'nt getting any fuel, so when i got home i pulled the cover off and noticed fuel laying on the bottom, was thinking i had a float sticking or a line clogged, this motor sat for 9 yrs, and also i pulled the cover off while in the lake and i could hold my hand on the cyls for a while so it was'nt over heating, but it was like only one carb was working, this is the second time i had it out first time it ran great.

Confirm spark and compression then clean the carbs make sure you get all 3 jets, should be one top front, one top side and main jet in the float bowl.

I have gotten the engine running and squirted a bit of premix into the carbs, if one of the cylinders takes off when you do this it is almost certainly dirty carbs.

Check your gas lines for cracks. I have an old Johnson 40 hp and when I first bought it, I had a simular issue.

i talked to the guy i got the motor from he said the same thing happened to him a few yrs ago and one of the coils went bad, so could the other coil of gone bad and causing the loss of power

i checked my plugs, they were a little wet but not bad, then i looked at the coils and one of them has cracks in it ,could that be the problem of running on one cyl?

Check for spark and you will know.

If you just start throwing parts at you will have a huge repair bill and a maybe running engine.

Juast because your buddies engine broke one way doesn't mean that is what is wrong with yours.

We aren't there so we can't tell what is wrong with it, check compression and spark and report back.
