no power

i have a 70hp merc on a boat i just got recently soon after i got it it ran kinda different it wouldnt go fast when you first start driving than it would just take off and work good rest of day now it wont go fast it idles good and i can slow troll but kills if i try to speed up it is a 2 stroke not sure of year i put new plugs in but still same prob. any advice would be appreciated

every mechanic I know hacks when they hear about a merc 70.

in most cases youll be replacing the entire ignition system, try pumping the fuel ball and see if it picks up

edit: I own this same motor, and when it did work properly I was pretty happy with it, that was short lived. ill be sure to post what wakes up my engine cause shes not running good at all

i find them to be lemons, the trigger was about 220$ i think and the stator 240$. waste of money for me but the old ones were infact out of spec and also no good. i donno what im going to do with my old 70 i want it to go bad i love that boat.

one that came in perfect working order may last a while or forever if not abused. if not getting the kinks out can be tough, we call it getting the mercury out cause all these black bricks arent built like the other unmentiond company....imo

i had boat home today running at idle with muffs on running good checked plug wires the bottom one is sparking through as i couldnt touch it without a shock is this my prob wires look little old i will put 3 new ones on
