NO pressure in pressure tank?

Tried to start a 56 johnson 30hp today after it sat for 1+ yrs. It has spark and 80+ compression in each cylinder. The fuel bowl was empty until I hooked up the pressure tank and pushed the button a few times. I saw the bowl fill up as I pressed the button on the tank. When I tried to start it there was some back fireing through the exhaust but no start. It doesn't seem to be getting any gas. I did pull the spark plugs and drop some fuel in each hole and put the plugs back in and hit the starter but no start. After 20 min. or so of this should I hear pressure escape when I loosen the filler cap on the pressure tank? It's a 6gal tank and I only put 1gal of gas and oil mix in it.Thanks for any help!

Re: NO pressure in pressure tank?

With only a gallon or so in the tank you will need the engine to pump 5 gallons of air pressure in there, Jim. It isn't going to do that unless it is running.

If it is backfiring through the exhaust it is igniting when the exhaust ports are open. That means it is either waaaaay out of time or the plug wires are on the wrong plugs.

First get her to start (see "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs forum), then worry about the fuel tank.

Good luck. :)

Don't even bother monkeying around with it till you remove the recoil starter and the inspection cover on the flywheel. Look in there and see if the coils are cracked. They probably are. They sell 'em here at iboats.

Re: NO pressure in pressure tank?

Check electricals first. You could have weak coil(s) and still get some spark with the plugs out of the cylinders. Check spark with a spark tester - should jump a 0.25" gap. Also check points - clean and set to .020". Also, make sure plug wires are on the right plugs. Front coil fires the top cylinder. Once electricals are sorted out, then fill the tank at least half full, spray some premix into the carb, and try again. If it fires with the premix, but doesn't keep running, then you either have a dirty carb, or the tank isn't building pressure.

Re: NO pressure in pressure tank?

Plug wires are on right and I ordered coils today from iboats on sale. I wanted to get it running before I tuned it up. It ran well when I took it off the boat 1 yr ago. I'm new at this so I go slow. THANKS
