I got a trailer for cheap because the owner had no registration for it. he said when he got it from the last owner it had no registration and that was like 15 years ago. What I can't find out is how to register it in NY with out a former registration to show the DMV. Do I just call it a home made trailer and put a new VIN on it? I would rather be honest and register it as it is but I'll do what I have to.

Like so many others, you just learned that when a title/registration is involved, don't buy it unless the owner can show the papers. Of course if you like to waste time solving these issues then go for it. Every minute you spend and every mile you drive trying to resolve the issue costs you money and eats away at any savings you may experience. And you run the risk of getting involved in a stolen vehicle situation.

register it as a ubilt trailer , you will need an inspection , apply for a vin number then you can register/insure it .

In states where an inspection is required, isn;t it going to be obvious to the inspector that this is NOT a home built trailer?
If it were me, I'd just buy /make another $100 trailer and register that one . Once you have the plate in hand, it's up to you what you bolt it on.

Ayuh,... New York is Easy,....
Weigh it empty, bring the weigh slip to the DMV,+ licence it as Homemade....
There's no inspection til after it's licenced,+ even then I don't bother with it... I've Never been asked for a trailer inspection sticker...

Thanks everyone. I'll go the home made route which brings me to my next question. I don't know if this is covered in earlyer posts but, how do you safely remove a boat from a trailer on dry land?

Re: no reg

dont worry the inspection facility wont question it and if they do but cant find a second vin on the trailer just stick to your word - i'm not saying break the law and steal trailers and do this -sometimes an honest guy just needs a break now and then .and you guy's are lucky - in canada its mandatory to have an inspection on a ubuild and any trailer used commercially even a light wally world trailer , but not for pleasure use we have insanely conflicting laws in canada - eh . and i hope wee hooker is right because here your plates have to match the registered vin# except when you purchase a vehicle you can use your old plates for up to 10 days and if you get pulled over you have to prove it with the transfer forms . anyway it will al work out .
