No response from port screw

Coming into harbor and maneuvering port screw failed to respond. At dock, engine funs fine and transmission engages and turns shaft. Underwater, we are able to turn port prop easily while starboard prop does not turn with both engines shut down. The is on a cruisers 2008 340. Engines are Volvo Pentax gii-h. Transmission is at zf 63 if-2.5

Can this be fixed in water?

Depends what failed.

Since these are inboards with ZF transmissions, most likely you will not need to be on the hard. Could be a control issue, a drive coupling issue, a trans issue, or an output shaft issue.

Should be able to turn prop shaft with engine off.

Depends on what's wrong and who is doing the work. The tranny weighs a lot so boat may need to be hauled out if a crane is needed to pull tranny.

Hi everyone. Yes bondo, oil in trans. No odd smell or color. I checked it before starting up that day. Engines have 72 hours on them. At dock and tied up, at idel, i engaged rand mission and it turns the shaft forward and reverse with no noise, vibration or such. I see the shaft turning as far as I can inside engine compartment.t

I noticed a small vibration at speed before but since I just got the boat, thought it was my imagination. Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

That's what I thought, but this is my first inboard so I don't know the schematic for the shaft to see if there is some sort of shear pin. But I'm in Lake Michigan and have not even come close to the bottom.

Underwater, we are able to turn port prop easily while starboard prop does not turn ,,,

What does this mean? Did you jump over the side and dive down and look at both props?
You have actually laid hands on or seen both props?
When you put it in gear tied to the dock is there prop wash?

K-2. Yes. Dove overboard and physically inspected props. Port prop present. Laid hands on prop and rotated it. No prop wash at all in gear. Nothing. But shaft turning inside engine compartment.

Is there a key on the prop shaft or is there a prop coupling outside of the hull?

I have the same problem on my 86 Sun Runner, Twin AQ260/290A SP. Port drive, propeller does not turn in forward or reverse. you can feel it engage when you put it in gear though. When we pulled to boat for transporting, we found you can turn the port prop freely in gear, but you cannot turn the starboard prop.
Dont know where the problem is yet. I guess I need to start with the lower unit and work my way back to the transmission.
Will update you on this soon.

Calling the marina that sold it to me. They took off the prop to bang out a ding so obviously they did something wrong. One mechanic I called said it's possible they put it on with no key and that if the nut was on tight enough, the boat would run for awhile without the key. Don't know if that's true.

You might have led with this fact! :) Usually the last one that touched any problem area is the most likely suspect with any subsequent problem in that area..

Working on one right now. Same issues, But the key sheared on the coupler, set screws had loosened, wrecking the whole works. shaft appeared to turn, but not enough to have thrust. I found the shaft and coupler totally ruined. New ones ordered today.

Closing this out. Had a mechanic come with a diver and the nut was loose. REmoved prop and key was sheared. No damage observed on prop or hub, so resintsalled after removing metal. Ran boat, no vibration observed.

Thanks for everyone's input on this. Helped alleviate anxiety for me since I am new to v drives and was worried I may have done something wrong.
