That's a 1972 Model you have there. Disconnect the shift cable at the motor if this is a mechanical shift motor(Some are electric shift). You can determine this by looking to see if there are any wires running down into the lower unit or if there is no shift cable going back to the motor. If it is electric shift, we will have to troubleshoot it in a different way. Anyway, look for the shift cable at the motor and disconnect it from the shift lever. Try to manually move the motor into reverse using the shift lever with someone turning the prop slowly counterclockwise. If it goes into reverse, then it is a shift linkage or control box issue. If it does not go into reverse, then it is a problem in the lower unit that would have to be diagnosed later on. Let us know what you find out...

I think that motor has electric push button shift.

hi ya,if its an electric shifter, had the same problem, and was told my a mechanic that it needed a new solenoid shifter,it was just a voltage drop between the shifer box and the solenoid,, if you test the volltage as near to the solenoid as ya can, then this should be 12 volts if it aint then ya need to replace the wiring.

If it is electric shift check with the guy you got it from and ask if he hit something while it reverse, there is a spring clutch for forward and reverse, kind of a spring to reduce shock if you hit something with the prop. If that is the deal you will have to replace the reverse clutch, i had this happen twice on a 85 evinrude, once for forward and once for reverse, you sure get some wierd looks when you have to back 4 miles to the dock. :p
