Re: No reverse in water

Could be the control cable needs to be adjusted or it could be that clutch dog is worn in the lower unit and not engaging reverse. There is no load on the motor when on the muffs, so that may be why it engages then and not in the water. Most times you loose forward when the clutch dog is wearing out, but I suppose it could happen in reverse first, too. I would disconnect the shift linkage, take it to the lake with another person at the helm and reach back and Manually shift the motor into reverse and see what happens. If it goes into reverse, it's more than likely the cable is worn or needs adjustment. If not, you will have to tear down the lower unit to find out the problem...

EDIT: What year is the motor and what is the serial number??

Re: No reverse in water

Hi Rick
Have just got back from boat and had the lower leg off and check the length of gear select shaft according to another post, did not make sense to my engine ,so put it all back and ran it in a tub of water, disconected all cables and engaged gears manually and they when in,the revers would kit out if i let go of it but went in gear,so i adjusted the cable by about an inch on the adjustment of the cable and it sorted it ,so i am hoping it is sorted now.I will have to take it to sea and and do the real test to be sure.I think the cable was stretched.
Thanx for your input.
