No reverse-Need to remove prop shaft

Ok I come to the decision I need to replace the clutch on the prop shaft of my 2002 25hp Mercury(25EL model). I can not get the carrier out to remove the shaft. Any special tool or idea how to remove.

First of all it is a left hand thread.-------I modified a piece of pipe to reach in to turn it.

Thanks racerone. I figured it was a left-hand tread but wasn't sure. Guess that is why one of the tabs is broke off. Thanks again.
