No reverse on 1979 Mariner 25hp HELP!!!!

Ok when ears on it and I put it in reverse it turns prop but when I went run it in the bayou won't go into reverse it sounds like its strippe like its not ping into gear all the way makes that grinding gear noise ...how can I go about taking all that apart to check out gear do I have to go through where the prop is r I have to drop the lower unit

Sounds like the clutch dogs are bad or its at a very high RPM

Have you tried to adjust the shift rod ?----Was lower unit off for water pump work ?

I don't have to drop the lower unit to adjust the leak u can see the nuts but I tryed that and no luck I took my prop off and there's a big metal ring around screwed in but I can seem to get if off to get to the gears

You need to revisit adjustment of the shift rod !-----I am convinced that is where the problem is.-------There was no history given on this motor so that is why I mentioned about the lower unit being off !

I adjusted it but still no help it slips out of gear and just grinds its not holdin it's probley wore out

??? reverse is not used a lot and not at full throttle / high loads.--------Hard to think that it is worn out !-----------Seperate the upper and lower shift rods.------Now push the lower shift rod all the way down.-----Use a block of wood to block the prop.----Try and turn the flywheel.

It didn't turn but buy I'm still trying to adjust linkage
