No Reverse On Johnson 130 H.P.

I have a 2000 130 Johnson Outboard engine on my boat it was running excellent. I had taken some friends out waterskiing all day, no probs...<br /><br />Until when I went to bring my boat in I noticed that I can no longer shift into reverse. If I go too far back with the shift control the engine will run forward??!! <br /><br />I would greatly appreciate any advice on what the possible problem could be, is it with the controls or engine?? Hoping that it will be something that I can repair myself. <br /><br />Looking forward to hearing from anyone<br />Thanks!<br />Bob

With the engine not running, Remove the shift cable at the engine shift lever connector.<br /><br />Now, (spin the prop with your foot while shifting to engage the shifter dog lobes properly while doing the shifting) shift the engine manually directly at the engine linkage.<br /><br />If the gears engage properly, then obviously the proplem is with the remote control section.<br /><br />You can tell if the gears engage properly by looking at the flywheel while pressing on the prop with your foot.... forward would make the flywheel want to move in one direction, reverse the opposite.
