I have a minn kota 24 volt mkaa1652226 maxxum 65t tilt tiller. Reverse don't work. It goes foward normally. I called minn kota, they said it needed a new board for $173.00. I was wondering if I can fix or rig it up with a switch my self. I know to reverse a dc motor all u have to do is flip the - and + wires. I can also solder so I can replace parts on the board. I can't see spending all that money on something that only cost me $300 batteries and all.

Re: no reverse on minn kota

You might want to , post this in electrical / trolling motor forum. Probably get better replies .
One of the moderators , will probably do it for ya.
As far as your motor, There may be alot more to getting reverse to work then you think. Is F/R controled by a circuit board or a seperate switch? If its a circuit board, you will most likely need, a new board or repair the old one. It may not be that difficult, being its only reverse, I dont know, as I dont have that motor. It would seem, that its just the F/R switch circuit.
If the old board is solid state , and you can isolate the faulty , chip, resistor, diode , variable resistor etc. Then you can probably, buy the needed component, at radio shack or the like. If , like I think, most of the boards on trolling motors ,are sealed in a medium of some sort.(waterproof) Which makes it almost impossible to trouble shoot / repair it. Just do as they said and replace it. Or buy a new motor. You may find , a non-running one, for parts if its like yours. You got a good deal on it , if its in good shape otherwise , I'd buy the board.

If it is repairable, you would of course need to have a good understanding of current flow, and how circuits work. As well as a test bench , which makes it alot easier.
Good-Luck,
KYHunter

Re: no reverse on minn kota

My RT74 recently stopped working in both directions. I took it apart and found that the speed control "card" is fried. I called MinnKota and the also say that I have to replace the whole board (although the card is an unlisted part for $30 that can be fixed with some "very delicate soldering"). The card itself is a very fragile appearing rheostat type device that has a plastic nub that presses down on a metallic piece. It seems very flimsy for such an important piece. Mine only lasted 3 years with what I would consider light usage. What really eats me up is that my unit is under warranty for a couple of weeks more, but there are no repair centers near me (200 miles). Mailing the motor to them would obviously be very expensive.
