Hey guys I just picked up a beautiful little engine for 100 bucks. It's a mercury 7.5hp, the S/N 7149805. I don't know what year it is so any info would help so I can get a manual.
SO here's the scoop. The guy who owned it before said it was a fantastic engine until one day it just wouldn't start anymore. He said in the spring he replaced the impeller and impeller housing, as well as obviously changed the lower unit oil. He took out for the first run on July long weekend and it ran fine until he got out into the middle of the lake. He shut it down and began to fish and when he went to start it, it just wouldn't start. So I have it now. I put it on the stand and put a bucket of water under it and tried to start it. I felt the prop first of all to see if it was in neutral or not. It clicked in one direction but when turned the other direction it was obviously in gear. The funny thing is the shifter was in the neutral position when the prop feels like this! I put the shifter into reverse and checked the prop and now it spins like neutral. I pulled the cord and it started first pull, and ran beautiful. So I proceeded to shift it into "neutral" from "reverse" and it engaged into forward gear! And with the engine off I tried to shift it into "forward" from "neutral" and it wouldn't fully engage and just stayed in gear. SO long story short when in "reverse" it's neutral and when in "neutral" it's drive, and no reverse. What would cause something like this? Did this guy no align something when changing the impeller and put the engine back together when it was in gear or something? Thanks boys
