Hey guys I just picked up a beautiful little engine for 100 bucks. It's a mercury 7.5hp, the S/N 7149805. I don't know what year it is so any info would help so I can get a manual.

SO here's the scoop. The guy who owned it before said it was a fantastic engine until one day it just wouldn't start anymore. He said in the spring he replaced the impeller and impeller housing, as well as obviously changed the lower unit oil. He took out for the first run on July long weekend and it ran fine until he got out into the middle of the lake. He shut it down and began to fish and when he went to start it, it just wouldn't start. So I have it now. I put it on the stand and put a bucket of water under it and tried to start it. I felt the prop first of all to see if it was in neutral or not. It clicked in one direction but when turned the other direction it was obviously in gear. The funny thing is the shifter was in the neutral position when the prop feels like this! I put the shifter into reverse and checked the prop and now it spins like neutral. I pulled the cord and it started first pull, and ran beautiful. So I proceeded to shift it into "neutral" from "reverse" and it engaged into forward gear! And with the engine off I tried to shift it into "forward" from "neutral" and it wouldn't fully engage and just stayed in gear. SO long story short when in "reverse" it's neutral and when in "neutral" it's drive, and no reverse. What would cause something like this? Did this guy no align something when changing the impeller and put the engine back together when it was in gear or something? Thanks boys

Sounds like he had the lower unit in fwd and the shift position in neutral. Drop your lower unit(very easy) and make sure both are in neutral. You can turn the shift shaft in the LU by hand once its off. The prop will spin in one direction and ratchet the other way in FWD. Neutral of course is neutral and it spins freely. Reverse will be locked in both directions. Just make sure they are both in neutral when you put it back together and you should be fine.

I just put my 1970 model 75 back together tonight and it needed to be in reverse for things to line up. I tried in neutral and she would not go, stuck both the rod and shifter in the reverse mode and it fell together. May be differences in those 15 years!

No big deal. wingedwheel hit it right on the head. Line everything back up and you'll be good to go.
BTW you got an awesome deal on that motor. It coult easily sell for five or six hundred bucks, maybe more.

OK SO, I undid the 2 bolts on the lower unit, it dropped right off nice and easy. I put the shifter in REV and the lower unit in REV and inserted it back in. Slid together like butter. Tightened up the bolts and Presto, rev, neutral, fwd all where they should be!! Thanks for the tips boys. Runs beautiful.

Good deal. I read someplace about those little motors needing the gearbox and shifter to be in reverse to line up. I don't know why this is, but it's something at the top side where the shifter turns the shaft.

Yea I know what you mean. I tried neutral and first and it wouldn't work at all, then tried fwd and that didn't work, but as soon as it was in rev, instantly slipped right in.
