No Reverse or very little, Please help

Morning everyone, well i didn't buy the Bayliner but bought a Four Winds instead. Very nice boat for a 1989. It has a 2.3 OMC and runs fantastic just needs alittle carb adjustment, however shifting into forward there are no issues but going into reverse in another issue. It wants to engage but doesn't seem to go far enough. How does a guy make these adjustments. Does the outdrive need to be taken apart or is the adjustment up on top of the engine?

It sounds like you need to adjust the transom shift cable that runs between the engine and the drive. The drive does need to be removed to perform the adjustment. You can find details about the procedure at item #2 here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=334348

It's not an easy procedure to get right, although it IS possible to do it without the special tools mentioned in the OMC manual.

Hi, I had similar problem last year with the used boat i had bought. Don't know if this helps any, but after replacing shift cable, a new (used) throttle handle/mechanism and a botched trip to a lake 6 hrs away, realised It was the cone clutch.
It would shift with no load fine, but in the water it was tough to get in to neutral. Then lost reverse totally. The first mechanic that was going to do repairs, did not have the special socket to take outdrive apart. So off to the next shop that had the right tools. Shifts great now. I think I found the clutch for about 450-500$. good luck.

Hola, Have the same boat with the same engine. Yes you must remove the outdrive to replace the tmsc for sure. Have just finished the procedure and now am really struggling with the adjustment. The omc cobra with dog clutch is a notorious gear eater and the tmsc cable was actually recalled and replaced for free by omc before they went out of business. A quick way to tell is look and see if your cable is black or red. If its black , get ready to replace it because you need the red one. Its not really a simple procedure unfortunately. let me know if i can help.
