I have a 1993 Bayliner 2452 with a 5.0L and a Gen 2 outdrive. I just replaced the bellows, Gimbal, and shift cable with all new parts. I have forward gear but when I shift to reverse it cuts out. I disconnected the lower shift cable from above and shifted into forward by hand with ease with the motor running. Then I shut down the motor and restarted it then tried to shift to reverse but it wont move. What should I look at next. The boat is in the water in a slip and I don't want to have to take it out. Could the problem be in the outdrive? Thanks, Mike

Ayuh,... More than likely, Yes...

My guess is you didn't have EVERYTHING in Forward when it was reassembled...
Wasn't the shifting operations Checked before the relaunch,..??

Re: No Reverse Please Help

Every time I pull a drive or drop a lower for something, i'll rehang it with just 1 nut and i'll jump in the boat and make sure it shifts into F-N-R with the motor off before I put it all back together.
99% of the time I don't miss, but every once in a blue moon i'll be off by a spline.
Unfortuneately you have to pull it all back apart. Look to make sure the shift cable is fully seated in the gimbal, make sure you can shift it by hand with the drive off, make sure you didn't bend anything putting it back on. When you go to put it back on lock the drive in fwd gear and use a bungee cord on the prop to hold it there.

Welcome to Iboats :)

Good Late Morning to ya Bill!

What do you mean by EVERYTHING? The shift handle was in forward WOT when the outdrive was installed and I pushed in on the cable and turned the prop counterclockwise and put the barrel at 6 inches. What could have I missed below when installing the outdrive?

The Propshaft has to be HELD in Forward,... Otherwise it slips into Neutral,+ you get what you've got...

Re: No Reverse Please Help

I use an old Aluminum prop for drive install and affix a bungee cord to keep pressure on the prop.

Re: No Reverse Please Help

Step by step instructions are found in the manuals found in the adults only section.

The only thing they won't tell you is this trick. With drive off, rotate the prop CCW while turning the shift arm into FWD gear, The shifter should point straight towards the front of the drive. Once you feel the propeller lock. Use a bungee cord and grab a prop blade and wrap it CCW again, and loop it up to the anti cavitation plate, this will keep it from slipping back into neurtal on you. Make sure you use all new gaskets.

Re: No Reverse Please Help

I got the boat home and pulled the outdrive. The lever with the little wheel was not in the grove of the bar attached to the end of the shift cable. It was riding on the outside of it towards the rear. I guess this was my problem all the time. With the drive off it shifts very smooth and moves the lever from pointing towards the front of the boat (forward gear) to pointing to the left side of the boat (reverse gear) with ease. The shift lever on the outdrive also moves real easy and locks the prop in both directions. Sorry if I sound like a rookie because I am. Im going to put the outdrive back on tomorrow morning and see if it will shift in the driveway. Thanks for all the help, Mike

Re: No Reverse Please Help

Can anyone tell me if the shift bar on the outdrive should turn 90 degrees. Mine turns about 75 degrees when going from straight to reverse. Thanks, Mike
