no reverse

1977 johnson 70 hp. lots of miles on it any ideas why reverse would be gone still works fine in forward.

can you disconnect the cable at the motor, and shift it manually? if you can then you have a bad cable, or cable adjustment. what does it do when you shift to reverse?

yes idisconected cable at motor still cnn,t shift when trying to shift with lever grinds like bottom end is going to blow up

sounds like the clutch dog is bad. cause usually by easing into gear, rather than a quick deliberate shift.
