No reverse

I just bought a boat with a Evinrude 50 from 1975. It works well exept for the reverse. It?s possible to shift between neutral to forward back and forth but no reverse when the engine is running. When engine is shut off it?s possible to put in reverse when rotating the propellar. But it feels like the shifter doesen?t go as far it should do, working properly.

Where do I start to search the cause of my trouble?

Re: No reverse

Are you shifting with the cable or have you removed the cable and are shifting by hand?

Has the lower unit been off lately? If so, was the shift rod adjusted properly?

Sounds like the cable may have stretched. If it shifts OK without the cable, that may be the problem.

Re: No reverse

Thanks for your fast answer, Dhadley.

I?m shifting without cable so i have to try to adjust the shift rod. I just bought the engine so i don?t know if someone had the lower unit off.

Two following questions:

How do i adjust the shift rod?

Can you easily mount the lower unit in a wrong way, causing the trouble i got?

Welcome to iboats, 1st you need to get he OEM service manual for you motor. reinstalling the lower unit, if the shift rod was turn when off, the rod will not be the correct lenght, either way it sounds like the shift rod was connected wrong. you also have to be sure the water tube lines up.

Thank You, Dhadley and tashasdaddy. After you pointed out where my problem probably is, i had the lower unit off. With the lower unit in my wrench it feels like the gears slides in in a proper way. I just have to adjust the rod by assembling. I decided to change the impellar at the same time.
