no reverse

My older (1965) 33hp evinrude shifts fine into fwd but clunks and often won't go into reverse<br /><br />If I shift into fwd first and then into reverse it will ofen go into reverse gear. Does this sound like a linkage problem to anyone or worn gears in lower unit<br /><br />My marina has cautioned me not to start taking it apart because of the age and big $$<br /><br />Thanks

I should add that when I can't engage reverse the motor grinds like it's trying to engage<br /><br />Also is it bad practce to shift into reverse directly from forward ?
