No RPM reading

Hello,

I recently purchased an 04 caravelle with a 4.3L mercrusier in it. The problem I am having is that the RPM gauge is not working. The integrated hour meter is still working but I don?t get any reading on the RPM gauge. Does anyone know where the wires come from on the engine so that I can check to see that they are connected and tight? Any other suggestions would be helpful. Someone mentioned that it may be a bad gauge.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: No RPM reading

Welcome aboard!

If I am not mistaken, the RPM gauge receives its input from the negative side of the coil.

Head up to the top of the page and you can download a manual for you engine and it should have a wiring diagram. It is in the "Adults Only" sticky.

You'll have one wire from the negative post of your coil on one side of the tach and one ground on the other side, also the tach may have a pos. for the night light.

Ayuh,... It could be a Bad gauge,...

Wiggle the big cannon plug where the motor,+ the boat come together, electrically...

Re: No RPM reading

Most tachs have a selector switch on the back for how many cylinders/poles. Make sure it is on the right setting and jiggle that switch back and forth. Mine stopped working and moving that switch thru the range made contact again and the tach started working again.

Thanks everyone for the help. I checked everything that was mentioned with no luck. Ordered a new guage, installed it and now it works like a champ.

Good for you. Glad it worked out. Gauges certainly do not last forever.
